Today’s example comes from none other than Dr Andrew Miller—WA’s COVID alarmist-in-chief—who has taken a break from peddling panic to mock one of the world’s oldest and most significant religious institutions.
Now, I’m not Catholic. But even as a Protestant, I was stunned by the ignorance and arrogance displayed in Dr Miller’s column. He attacks the Vatican for its alleged sexism because—shockingly—no women were present in the conclave to elect the new Pope. This, of course, reveals a total lack of understanding about how the Catholic Church operates. But that doesn’t stop Dr Miller from using the occasion to sneer at Christian tradition and push his own brand of pro-abortion feminism.
Apparently, watching the film Conclave with his son now qualifies him to lecture the Church on theology, doctrine, and divine nature. Most offensively, he refers to God as “a fallible, fabulous construct” and insists that “she does not have to be perfect.”
This isn’t clever. It’s not thoughtful. It’s blasphemous, childish, and deeply offensive to millions of Australians of faith. Whether you’re Catholic or not, you should be concerned when mainstream newspapers give a platform to such juvenile attacks on people’s deeply held religious beliefs – particularly ones exposing such elementary ignorance.
If Dr Miller wants to rant about the ongoing dangers of a virus so deadly you need a test to know if you have it, that’s his business. But when he starts spouting ignorant nonsense about God, faith, and the Church, he reveals just how out of his depth he really is.
