Protect Our Kids From Porn: Vote 1 Australian Christians

Pornography is doing serious damage to Australian society. We need to talk about it.

Porn is now a US$97 billion global industry. We are now decades into this experiment called the Sexual Revolution — which means we have robust data sets revealing how pornography is affecting us.

One meta-analysis that looked at fifty studies revealed that men who consumed pornography were much less happy with their romantic relationships and relationships in general.

Both men and women who use porn report relationship insecurities, anxiety, and body-image issues. Strong correlations between porn and loneliness, and porn and depressive symptoms, have been found in other studies.

One of the reasons people keep returning to pornography despite the damage it does is because of its addictive power. Brain scans show that the effect porn has on users is extremely similar to a heroin or cocaine hit.

Indeed, Cambridge researcher Dr. Valerie Voon, who has studied brain scans of healthy patients and those who were porn-addicted, concludes that “these differences mirror those of drug addicts.”

Pornography has a devastating impact on marriage. One study that followed the marriages of couples over time found that divorce was twice as common among couples that began using pornography in comparison to those who didn’t.

There are strong statistical links between porn consumption and less stability in relationships, greater likelihood of infidelity, and a devaluing of both marriage and family.

This may all sound like terrible news but we’re just getting started!

Porn is extremely harmful to children — especially in the age of smartphones, tablets, and screens in every room of the house.

The average age that children are first exposed to porn is 11 years old. By the time they turn 18, 90% of boys and 60% of girls have already visited porn sites. Among young people, internet pornography is statistically linked to sexual activity at younger ages, multiple sex partners, group sex, and other risky sexual behaviours.

Not only this, but some 20,000 images of child pornography are uploaded to the internet each week. Since 2002, over 10,500 victims depicted in child pornography have been found.

The United States Department of Justice and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children have both identified pornography as a contributing factor to sex trafficking.

We often speak of the abolition of slavery in 19th century Britain. In fact, there are an estimated 20 to 40 million slaves in the world today — more than when slavery was abolished. Approximately 22% are victims of forced sexual exploitation, which includes the production of pornography.

There is simply no way to sugarcoat it: pornography is a soul-destroying, society-rotting curse.

Perhaps the proverbial genie is out of the bottle, and without widespread revival or cultural renewal, we would be hard-pressed to see major changes to this cultural trend.

But at the very least, we can vote for strong protections that keep children safe from some of pornography’s worst harms.

Australian Christians is committed to fighting for policies that require ISPs (Internet Service Providers) to filter the content that Australians access online.

We see a clear distinction between free speech and robust filters for pornography, since porn isn’t speech, and it certainly isn’t art. Like smoking, drugs and other social ills, the harms of porn are clear — especially to children.

We invite you to Vote 1 Australian Christians for serious action on this urgent issue. Not all freedom sets us free. Some freedom in fact leaves us and our children in chains.

Most parties are silent on porn. We’re not ashamed to speak about it and to set the standard for safety and sexual integrity in our nation. Join with us today!
