The last few weeks have been interesting!
We saw everything from a Christian Prime Minister elected in Italy, to a Christian being hounded out of Essendon Football Club for his Christian beliefs. Standing boldly and courageously has never been more important! If this does not encourage people to VOTE 1 for an unashamed Christian party who consistently defends faith, freedom and families, we don’t know what will. This is where we draw the line in the sand; make a stand and vote! For years, AC have been cautioning churches on this impending ‘paradigm shift’ due to the legalisation of same sex marriage in 2017.
Interestingly, many Australians have taken an interest in Italian politics. Giorgia Meloni has garnered worldwide attention for her courageous defence of family, biological sex, faith in God and good old-fashioned common sense.
These are views that we at Australian Christians want to see defended an upheld in our nation. At a time when identity, gender, sexuality and family have become overly complicated, we need to return to basics with a clear path forward for godly governance.
“National identity is under attack,” Meloni stated in a 2019 speech that has gone viral since her election. “Religious identity is under attack. Gender identity is under attack. Family identity is under attack.” She continued:
I must not be able to define myself as Italian, Christian, female, mother. No. I must be “Citizen X”, Parent 1, Parent 2. I must be a number, because when I’m only one number, when I no longer have an identity, when I have no more roots, well then, I will be the perfect slave, at the mercy of the great financial speculators; the perfect consumer.
In the face of these challenges, Meloni declared:
“We are here to say we are not numbers. We will defend the value of the human person—of each single human person—because each of us has a unique genetic code that is unrepeatable and it is sacred. We will defend it, we will defend God, the homeland and family, that disgust these people so much”.
Bizarrely, Giorgia Meloni has been characterised by the legacy press as “dangerous”, a “far-right nationalist” and even as a “fascist”. Leftwing rag The Atlantic wrote a hit piece on Meloni entitled The Return of Fascism in Italy, arguing that she represents “continuity with Italy’s darkest episode: the interwar dictatorship of Benito Mussolini.”
YouTube went as far as removing her 2019 speech, quoted above, for “violating YouTube’s Community Guidelines”. When conservative news outlets asked the platforms which standards her speech violated, the video was quietly reinstated.
In fact, Meloni is anti-dictatorship and anti-authoritarian. She is critical of global bodies like the EU, the UN and the WEF now dictating the affairs of European nations with little democratic accountability.
Even Meloni’s chief political rival has called out the nonsense. Former liberal PM Matteo Renzi told CNN, “There is not a danger for Italian democracy. She’s my rival, I’m her rival, we will continue to fight each other, but the idea now that there is a risk of fascism in Italy is absolutely fake news.”
What the media apparently fears is Giorgia Meloni’s populism—and more specifically, her socially conservative values. In a time when the family unit is under attack, religious faith and national values are maligned as evil, and people are confused with lies about gender and sexuality, Meloni is willing to speak common-sense truths that were accepted by the vast majority until the late 2010s.
Giorgia Meloni is a reminder to Australian believers that we will be opposed and even hated when we stand for godliness. This shouldn’t reflect poorly on us, but rather on our detractors. As C. H. Spurgeon once said:
Be ready for a bad name; be willing to be called a bigot; be prepared for loss of friendships; be prepared for anything so long as you can stand fast by him who bought you with his precious blood.
Christians are not perfect, nor do they make perfect politicians. But their place in our parliaments and public debates is vital. Followers of Jesus have an intrinsic motivation to seek what is right and to steer society away from what is evil.
This is why the Australian Christians so values your support to see Christian legislators elected to our parliaments. We invite you to continue praying for and supporting us—which you can do by sharing this article and voting 1!
